There are so many breathtaking weed strains on the market today that it can be difficult for an enthusiast to choose only one as a favorite, but there are rare marijuana plant breeds that impress everyone before they even have the chance to taste any. One look at these colorful colas is often enough to send people into a frenzy, skyrocketing the price of these delightful species, but only a few are so intense that they hardly look real, and those are the ones that we will feature here today.

Indica vs Sativa – Which is more colorful?

It’s quite common to see different green and reddish variations among weed strains, but deep and bold blues, purples and black are fewer, which is why some people never get to experience the darkest most beautiful side of cannabis. This genetic component is not something that is more common among either Indica or Sativa strains, but it does tend to be enhanced by hotter more humid climates.

What makes colors form in marijuana plant buds?

Every marijuana plant starts out as a bright light green seedling or clone that slowly evolves into a matured plant, boasting buds or seeds aplenty. It is not until well into the flowering process that most of these darker colors appear, and it happens for two reasons:

  • The first is genetics, which plays a massive role in how a plant will look.
  • The second is environment, through a process called photosynthesis. As the plant consumes the precious light rays it turns the excess proteins into bright beautiful colors which are most noticeable in the buds and leaves.

Do dark colors in a marijuana plants indicate potency?

Some of the darkest weed strains in the world are incredibly potent, but just like with any other marijuana plant, the color of the buds is not necessarily an indicator of potency or cannabinoid content. That is something that is determined by the trichomes and other determining factors that are not so easy to see with the naked eye. Aesthetics of a plant are only part of the equation and not one that is reliable enough to determine strength.
