If you live in a lower income neighborhood, studies indicate that you should have no problem accessing a retail cannabis dispensary.

Canada has positioned its most concentrated pot shops in the country’s most impoverished neighbourhoods, according to studies whose subjects were within one kilometre of a cannabis dispensary. One of the lead authors of the study indicates that this as a problem, and he suggests that the concentration of the dispensaries in these areas could pose potential health concerns.

Dr. Ryan further believes that the government has set up unfair boundaries. The people living in lower-income areas have more access to cannabis. This could be leaving this sector of the population in these areas overexposed to the marijuana plant. Which in Dr. Myran's view could mean that these individuals are being set up to consume more cannabis, thus exposing themselves to potentially more harm.

Statistics Canada conducted a study which indicated that those making less than $40,000 per year were the countries heaviest consumer of the marijuana plant. Cannabis science indicates that the marijuana plant can be associated with some adverse health outcomes. Some of these include mental health issues, increased motor vehicle accidents, and unintentional poisoning of young children.

Let’s look at the different businesses that are operating in the cannabis space within lower-income sectors. The two well-known cannabis businesses are the dispensaries and the cultivators. However, these are not the only ones. Some labs are focused on cannabis science, product testing, and creating edibles and concentrates. Many cannabis industry-specific data platforms, and not to be forgotten is the vast number of professionals, including attorneys and marketers who are included in the cannabis space.

Types of cannabis businesses

The cannabis industry, as we know, can be broken down into two specific areas, including plant-touching and ancillary. Plant touching businesses do just that, as they are the types of companies that are handling the marijuana plant itself. These companies usually have the strictest compliance and regulations. The companies in this field have to navigate complicated licensing processes to enable the legal operation of their businesses.

Ancillary businesses are companies used to support the processing and sales of cannabis products. They support the growth of the marijuana plant and include point-of-sale systems through attorney’s accountants and more. These are the types of companies that are needed to support the cannabis industry space. Within the lower-income sections of a town, all of the mentioned professions and businesses have direct or indirect dealings with cannabis and cannabis science.

Breeder
The prime focus of a breeder is to develop high-quality marijuana seeds. Many breeders are involved in cannabis science, which can include creating new cannabis strains.

Cultivator
These are the businesses that are hands-on, growing marijuana plants. Some states in the USA have a requirement that requires the cultivator to be vertically integrated with dispensaries. This is to hopefully ensure one operator managing the full operation from growth to sale.

Dispensary
This is where the consumer can purchase the cannabis product.
Ancillary service provider
These are the companies that sell to other companies and businesses within the cannabis space.

These are a just a few of the businesses that can be found in the cannabis space. Take a look around the most impoverished areas in your community. Are the studies correct when delivering the numbers of businesses that are cannabis-related in the less privileged sections of town? As suggested, take a walk in these neighborhood’s and ask around you may be surprised at what you discover and where cannabis businesses are located.
