If you’ve got plans to celebrate Halloween this year, then you’re probably scrambling to settle on one of a million Halloween costume ideas, but it’s hard to find something that’s easy, affordable, and cannabis-related on the market these days. Despite widespread legalization, the fad of adult Halloween costumes with a weed theme has never really caught on, making the few options that are out there both unaffordable and unoriginal. Luckily, after several years of experimentation, we know how to do it right, and with much ado, we’re here to present you with five simple DIY Halloween costumes for stoners.

1. Bong

The wonderful thing about fashioning yourself a bong costume is that the choices that you have to choose from are virtually endless. You could be a can bong, a glass gravity bong, a hookah bong or even an apple bong if you’ve got the patience to make the right shape. However, since we’re trying to keep things as easy as possible, here you’ll find step by step instructions for a basic water bong Halloween costume that can be quickly turned into a can, with a bit of aluminum foil once it’s all put together, instead of paint.

You will need:

  • 3-4 large pieces of bristle board (any color of choice)
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue
  • Large clear plastic transparent cup
  • Small plastic transparent cup
  • Dry green leaves

Instructions

  1. Use the bristle board and the craft glue to create a large tunnel that can fit over top of your body to slide on and off.

  2. Once the main tube is dry, you can now move on to the face and armholes. To do this, it might help to get the assistance of a friend so that you can try the tube on, and they can mark where you face, and arms naturally rest. This doesn’t have to be precise, as you can start out with small holes and trim them down to fit everything perfectly as you go.

  3. When you’ve got the spots marked with a marker or small hole, it’s time to widen everything up so that your arms can fit comfortably, while you can see clearly out of the face hole. This may take a lot of trimming if you don’t want your view to be obstructed, but by the time you’re finished, you should have two smaller armholes and one large one that goes around the entirety of your face.

  4. Next up is the stem portion and depending on the thickness of your glue, it
might need to be done in a couple of steps, leaving time for each one to dry before adding another, but to start, you’ll want to look at the tube and visually assess the best spot for the stem and bowl to go.

  5. Once you’ve settled on a spot, cut a hole that is the same diameter as the bottom of the small cup and then press the bottom into it to test the fit.

  6. At first, the cup is likely to stick straight out of the side, so now you’ll need to tug on it until it’s on an upward angle that resembles a bong stem. once you’ve got it into place, you can seal up the hole with glue and then let it sit until it dries.

  7. Now take the large cup and place it base down on the first one that you’ve installed, using glue to fix it into place. By the time you’re done, this part should look like a regular bong stem that is ready to be packed with weed.

  8. For this next step, you’ll need to crumple up the dry leaves so that they resemble cannabis grind and then glue the bits into place layer by layer until the bowl is full and looking freshly packed.

  9. At this point, the basic bong costume is complete, and all that’s left to do is some decorating if you want some special décor or color to really bring the outfit to life.

2. Joint

Out of all of these DIY Halloween costumes, the joint is likely the easiest of the bunch because there is no way to mess this one up. It’s simple, as all you’ll need are a few basic art supplies and in no time, you can roll yourself up into the ‘biggest and baddest’ joint on the streets for Halloween. However, for the best visual effect, it’s best to wrap yourself right before you’re ready to go because the fit will be hard to take off.

You will need:

  • 1 large roll of white paper (as wide as you can get)
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Green yarn (or red for a lump of hot coal)

Instructions

  1. To start, you’ll need to decide how much of your body you want to turn into a giant joint, because if you go below the waist, it might be hard to take bathroom breaks without damaging the costume, making it less than ideal for longer events. Once you’ve figured that out, you’ll need to cut a section of the paper roll that is long enough to cover everything that you hope to, which will likely be from your waist to just above the top of your head, but in the end, it’s entirely up to you.

  2. Hold the paper sheet against your body to see where your face will rest and then cut out a large hole that will leave you plenty of room to breathe.

  3. Once you’ve got that part figured out, then it’s time to wrap yourself up in a roll, which can be done by wrapping the cut paper around you from behind, and then sealing the deal with one single seam, just like a joint. It might take a few tries to get this wrap tight and joint shaped, but once you’re satisfied with its placement, it won’t take long to get it glued into place.

  4. Now you’re a joint that’s missing it’s filling, and to complete the bud or hot ash look, you’ll need to unwrap and then ball up the yarn in a semi tangled fashion until it is large enough to fit nicely into the top of your joint.

  5. Glue the ball into place, and then you’ll be ready to hit the street with this fantastic DIY Halloween costume.

3. Blunt

You might be thinking that both the joint and blunt adult Halloween costumes should be pretty much identical, but here you’ll be wanting to replicate the intricate folds of a cigar wrap by gluing the paper on an angle, so this one is definitely a bit more tricky, but it’s an excellent choice for all cannabis lovers, as it’ll be easy to recognize from miles away.

You will need:

  • 1 large roll of brown paper (as wide as possible)
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Green yarn (or red for a lump of hot coal)

Instructions

  1. Since blunts are often rolled using a cigar casing that’s been unwrapped, the best way to recreate that look is by wrapping yourself with the brown paper on a slight angle in a candy cane fashion, gluing everything into place as it lines up.

  2. Once you get to your head, it might help to have a friend who can assist by carving out the perfect hole so that you can comfortably breathe while the process continues.

  • When you are finished, you’ll notice that there will be a small flat at either end of the blunt costume, but those can be easily trimmed off so that they look sharp and straight.

  • Next up is the green, which, just like with the joint costume, can be easily created by wrapping your choice of colored yarn into a ball that is large enough to fit into the tip.

  • Finally, use a bit of craft glue to hold the yard into place, and then you’ll be ready to party hard for Halloween.

  • 4. Grinder

If you like the idea of showing off your stoner spirit with one of these DIY Halloween costumes, but you want something that is a bit more unique than your average roll, then this option might be the happy medium that you seek. As you’ll see further down on this list, the more challenging of an endeavor you can expect, but if you’re up for the challenge, then why not dress up to party as a grinder this year?

    You will need:

    • 2 hula hoops
    • 2 metal hangers
    • Wire cutters
    • Craft glue
    • Duct tape
    • Aluminum foil (or shiny paper in your preferred color)
    • Silver yarn (or a complementary color to the one you’ve chosen)

    Instructions

    1. Turning yourself into a grinder is relatively simple, but it will take a while to complete, so make sure that you have the time and patients to dedicate to the task before you start by placing two hula hoops on the floor in front of you.

    2. Now have a friend hold them up on either side of you so that you can measure the distance between them with ease, as this will be needed to cut the wire.

    3. Once you know how wide you need it, it’s time to unravel the wire hangers and cut them down to a size that leaves just enough on each end to wrap up once around the hula hoop. You’ll want a total of four of these connecting pieces with two above your shoulders and two below for the best fit.

    4. Use the wire to attach the hula hoops, and then test out the fit, which can be adjusted by carefully sliding each of the pieces up or down until it’s comfortable.

    5. At this point, you’ve likely noticed that the wires will keep moving, which is why you’ll have to duct tape each point into place until you’re certain it will hold.

    6. If you’ve done everything right up until now, you should be holding the perfect shaped frame for a grinder costume, so if yours looks like it’s still a bit out of shape, now is the time to go back and make any necessary adjustments.

    7. Use aluminum foil to cover the whole outer part of the body of the frame, leaving only two holes. One above the top two bars that will rest on your shoulders, and another beneath them.

    8. When you are done, it should look like a metal drum of sorts. Now it’s time for the finishing touch, which is the yarn. Take one large piece that is long enough to go around the entire circumference of the grinder to make it look as though you’re wearing two grinder sections, and then glue it into place.

    9. Now, you can choose to add logos or designs or wear the cannabis costume plain. Either way, it’ll be a conversation starter for sure.

    5. A bag of edibles

For those who want a choice that is a bit easier to personalize according to preference, a bag of edibles might offer the perfect solution because you can make it as detailed or simple as you like. You can make the label look like any cannabis edibles that you can think of, but it’s more fun to stick with the classics and play with traditional logos such as Hershey’s or Nerds to produce your very own ideal edibles wrapping.

    You will need:

    • Large garbage bag
    • Spool of aluminum wire
    • Wire cutters
    • White paper (for the label)
    • Craft glue
    • Markers or paint

    Instructions

    1. Flatten out the garbage bag on the ground, and then use the metal wire to create a frame that will hold its rectangle shape by forming one that is the same size as the bag itself.

    2. Test out the fit by sliding the garbage bag over the frame. If there is too much space, then you’ll need to make a wider frame, and if it doesn’t fit, then it will need to be trimmed down a bit.

    3. Now slice a hole in the top center of the bag, which is the portion that is typically the bottom, so that your head can fit through.

    4. Cut two more holes so that your arms can reach outside of the bag when you put it on.

    5. Cut the paper to size so that it looks like the perfect blank label for a package of edibles, and then glue it onto the plastic bag.

    6. Use paint, markers, or other craft supplies to decorate the front of your edibles bag to look like your favourite treats, and once you’re finished, you’ll be ready to sport your own homemade cannabis-themed Halloween costume.
