Cannabis can lift you up when you’re feeling down, wrap you in a warm hug when you need some relaxing relief, and it can be a whole lot of fun, but the experience isn’t all sunshine and rainbows for everyone. Some consumers end up anxious, even deathly afraid, after consuming too much in a sitting, and though it’s rare, it’s possible to develop an allergy to cannabis that can be deadly if left unchecked, but the most common side effect that can be triggered by cannabis is burnout.

What is burnout?

Some signs of burnout include feeling overwhelmed, mentally drained and overall unable to keep up with daily tasks, and this is something that is often brought on by prolonged or excessive amounts of stress. However, cannabis can exacerbate and even create this issue for some consumers. When people are burnt out, they tend to shy away from things like social engagements, and they can become much more susceptible to getting lost in a sea of depression.

Ways to prevent cannabis burnout

This isn’t normally something that’s going to be brought on by the occasional joint or bong hit on the weekends, still, it can impact anyone who is using too much weed. Now what that means from one person to the next is another question entirely, and one that cannot be simply answered because each person is different. However, there are some things that you can do to prevent burnout like:

1. Consume cannabis in moderation

Moderation is important when it comes to enjoying any mind-altering substance, even those that we tend to view as harmless, like caffeine. Too much weed can create a dependence that might present itself as burnout, and as most enthusiasts already know, it doesn’t always take much to toke yourself into a couch-bound mess, and that can also make you feel some of the signs of burnout. A little overindulgence isn’t necessarily evil, but it is something to enjoy in moderation.

2. Stay hydrated

You might be surprised to learn that over half of the world's population is chronically dehydrated because we tend to reach for things like coffee or juice instead of a cold crisp glass of water, things that will actually take water from the body rather than adding it. This can take its toll on your health, leaving you feeling groggy, slow, depressed, or just not quite your usual self. 8 glasses of water per day are what’s recommended, and this is a move that can truly help to prevent burnout.

3. Pick appropriate types of day to get high

A wake and bake session sound exciting to most enthusiasts, and starting the day off right with a big, fat blunt is heaven for some consumers, but for others, it can significantly contribute to their risk of burnout. This is because the effects are short-lived, which means that in no time you’ll be coming down feeling relaxed, and likely less than motivated. For most, the end of the day is the most efficient time to get high, so that if they do experience burnout, there is the option of sleeping the effects away.

4. Seek out the best strains for you

If you’re smoking too much weed, then perhaps it’s time to find a strain that’s more potent, or maybe it’s the strong euphoric strains that are causing the fog you seem to be stuck in, in which case a more energizing type might be the best solution. What works for some situations might not be agreeable for all of them, and the strains your friends use might have the complete opposite effects on you. Choose a strain that’s known for producing the experience you want if you really want to prevent burnout.

5. Exercise

One of the most essential areas of focus for those who are burning out should be staying healthy, something that can be influenced by adopting things like healthy eating habits and regular exercise. Smoking weed might make you feel like you’re too glued to the couch to move, but once you make it a common occurrence, it will eventually become second nature. Sunlight, fresh air, and simply being outside of the house are all good things for someone with burnout.
