What is hemp, and why would you want to make clothing from it?

Hemp comes from one of the varieties of marijuana, and it contains minuscule measurable amounts of  THC. THC is the component in cannabis that presents itself with psychoactive qualities. Hemp is a strain of the cannabis Sativa plant that is bred for the usefulness of its materials, which can be processed into industrial products. It’s THC content is extremely low. However, CBD can be found in higher concentrations among some hemp strains.

Hemp is the industrial variant of the marijuana plant, and it is cultivated for its flowers, seeds and fibers. The natural healing aspect from the leaves is a bonus on top of the eco-friendly nature of the plant, as this requires no pesticides and grows well with very little water. Hemp renews the soil with each growth cycle, leaving a fresh patch of nutrient soil in its wake. Pure hemp has served humanity for thousands of years. Materials that are produced from hemp have been discovered in tombs dating back to 8000 BC.

How hemp clothing/material is made

The bast or fiber is used for hemp fabric to produce hemp clothing, tarps, rope, and other strong materials. These fibers can be used to make 100% hemp; however, they are most often blended with other well-known fabrics like silk or cotton.

This hemp fibre is embedded deep within in the hollow tube of the stalk of the plant. It is a string like a band that runs lengthwise inside of the plant's stem. If harvested correctly, the fiber from the plant is stronger than steel. Before the 1920s, 80% of clothing was made from hemp textiles. Currently, China is a top producer of hemp stalks; the government claims the hemp industry to be worth over $200M.

Why should I choose hemp for my clothing fabric?

Hemp, when used for clothing, helps in promoting personal health in numerous ways. Hemp and its blends are more absorbent and more mildew-resistant than 100% cotton. All fabric that uses a 50% or higher blend of hemp can block more UV rays than the non-hemp material, which makes hemp a perfect fabric for outdoor use. Hemp fabric also doesn’t create static due to being the same net static charge as what the human skin possesses. This ability makes the resonating with our electromagnetic fields perfect.
