How to make a pipe out of a musical recorder
Pretty much everyone knows what a recorder is, as it is one of the very first instruments thrust into our hands in public school. Though these often annoying and simple instruments might not be our favorite memory from the past, if you have one lying around, they can make the perfect base for a homemade weed pipe. It might sound a bit odd, considering the multiple holes and lack of a consistent draw, but this transformation takes only a few tweaks which means you can turn a whole bunch of recorders into functioning smoking pipes in a matter of just a few minutes.
You will need:
- Recorder
- Cannabis
- Tape (clear, masking, or electrical)
- Grinder
- Lighter
- Bong stem (optional & must fit perfectly into the end of the recorder to work)
- Dish soap (optional)
- Paper towels
How to make a pipe out of a recorder
It is important to note that this homemade weed pipe is not ideal for long term use. This DIY project is intended to work as a short term solution to glass or metal smoking pipes, but it will not last as long, and depending on the brand that you have, there may or may not be some release of chemicals when the plastic is heated.

Start by washing out the recorder, so that you aren’t inhaling old dust or bacteria that might be held within. Hot water alone might be sufficient, but it is best to use a detergent, like a dish soap so that you know it’s been properly disinfected.

Dry the recorder by banging it out over a paper towel to remove any excess liquid.
Now here is where things get a bit more complicated, use the tape to seal off all of the holes including the largest one which is located approximately 1 inch away from the mouthpiece. One single piece of tape isn’t going to create the seal that you will need for your homemade weed pipe to work, so you are going to need to wrap the pipe tightly with tape, to ensure a strong and reliable seal. This step may take a couple of layers, so be patient and consistently check the draw so that you know when to stop.
Once the holes are completely sealed, it is time to move on to using the homemade weed pipe. Get out a grinder, and prepare the marijuana buds to be smoked, just as you would for any joint, blunt or bowl.
When the herb is ground, take a small amount and stuff it into the end opposite of the mouthpiece or into a bong stem that is securely placed at the end of the recorder. It may take some adjusting, as you need to be able to take a draw without dislodging the weed, but it also needs to fit snugly which can cut off airflow.
Once you are satisfied with the packing of your weed pipe, it is time to spark it up and enjoy the fruits of true stoner ingenuity for yourself.
