With marijuana legalization still fresh in the rear view, it’s important to recognize the evolution of the industry. As it changes into an entirely new world of products that most of us have never seen or heard of before. One of the most underrepresented groups in the illegal cannabis market was women which is mainly due to the fact they consume fewer marijuana edibles, and flowers then their male counterparts. However, this is a trend that appears to be slowly changing as brand new and unique products that are geared specifically towards females hit the spotlight.

Women, in general, are much more health interested in health and wellness purchases which has sparked some market research into how that affects what they choose to purchase, and the types of products that the ladies tend to prefer. There are two sections that this is broken down into. The first is the difference between gender preferences, and the second includes products that women seem to find more appealing.

Men vs. women

As mentioned before, men consume a whole lot of drier herb than their female counterparts. However, in other product sections, women dominate the marketplace. Here is the official break down by category:

Concentrates: 11.5% of men and only 9% of women purchase cannabis concentrates.

Pre-rolls: 7.6% of men and 7.2% of women are buying marijuana pre-rolls.

Tinctures and marijuana edibles: 1.9% of men and 2.7% of women purchase cannabis tinctures.

Topicals: 1.5% of men and 2.2% of women are buying topicals like makeup, shampoo, creams, and balms.

Vape pens: 11.4% of men and 13%.6 of women prefer vape pens over smoking cannabis.

Female customer preferences

Now that you see the differences between the types of marijuana dispensary products purchased by both genders, it is time to focus on the specific qualities that women find more appealing.

Scent- When cannabis researchers questioned men about their thoughts and opinions on how marijuana edibles, herb, tinctures, juices, or concentrates smell, they found a massive indifference. The majority preferred to find a product that was potent and couldn’t care less what it smelled like. Women, on the other hand, are much choosier and drawn to certain smells including fruits, flowers, and favorite foods like chocolate or strawberry.

Health- Women are often viewed as the caretakers of the family, so it makes sense that they lean towards healthier products. Ladies are much more likely to avoid a product if it contains a noxious substance like butane and much more likely to spend a little extra for something that has extra additives like Aloe Vera, coconut oil, or vitamins.

Wellness- Females are also driven more towards marijuana products that offer wellness benefits. Some of the most popular items among women in 2018 were face creams and masks, makeup, lotion, sunscreen, healing balms, lip chap, muscle cream, and other items of a therapeutic nature.

Method of ingestion- Women are much more health and appearance conscious, and their choices in cannabis products show that their preferred method of ingestion is no different. With 20% more women than men preferring a vaporizer or marijuana edibles over other devices meant for smoking.

Low dose- The biggest commonality found across all cannabis products in the category for women is that they will typically prefer lower doses of THC, while also opting for the highest CBD amounts possible. The average cannabinoids found in vape pens purchase by women had between 1%-10% CBD and most often contained less THC.

If you are a woman with preferences outside of this newest research, then we want to hear from you! Just drop a comment down below to let us know what you think. Please keep in mind that we do know that not all women are going to fit into this range of statistics. I myself am an avid user that consumes so much more than the majority of the men that I smoke with, but that doesn’t change the fact that these are the new averages recently gathered by the cannabis industry which are being followed and catered to by marijuana dispensaries and producers all over the world. Slowly evolving the market to include new product choices that can suit the needs of all cannabis users equally.
