Cannabis is entirely legal to grow and possess in Canada, but despite that change, Canadians do not yet have access to certified or tested marijuana edibles. We can, however, make them ourselves at home if we have the right ingredients on hand. Making your edibles is relatively easy once you get the hang of it but can be a daunting challenge if you have never tried it before. For those that are less confident and or less experienced, we have designed this helpful step by step guide on how to make weed cake. Many of the tips and tricks included here can translate well over to other cannabis-infused recipes, and cannabis cake is the perfect stepping stone for anyone who is just starting to  learn how to make marijuana-infused edibles. So, let’s jump right in and get you started on how to make weed cake.

Choose a recipe

  • The very first step to making cannabis cake is choosing the recipe that you would like to experiment with. It’s always a good idea to remember that the taste of marijuana can be best disguised with stronger flavors, but you can ultimately infuse any traditional dessert recipe, with minimal effort. Once you have settled on the type of cake you are making, it is time to move your focus to the ingredients list.

Choose which ingredients you want to infuse

  • Regular cake recipes might include an assortment of different elements, but only certain ones can be adequately infused at home. It’s always a good idea to look for the liquid ingredients or those like butter which may appear solid but change consistency after being introduced to the heat.

  • The most popular infused ingredients to use in weed cake recipes are cannabutter (butter), cannabis oil (coconut or vegetable oil), and cannamilk (white milk). This is because these ingredients provide a high-fat content, and the THC molecules bind to fatty acids, so a high-fat product is going to be much simpler to infuse than a low-fat version.

  • If you enjoy alternatives like olive oil, then it can still be infused, but it will likely take longer, and end up less potent. So that is a critical aspect to keep in mind when choosing which ones you would like to infuse.

Make your infused ingredients

  • As was mentioned before, higher fat elements are the most efficient for extracting and holding the precious cannabinoids like THC or CBD. Coconut oil and vegetable oil are preferred in cannabis cake recipes, as they do not negatively change the flavor, and each provides that high fat base.

  • Another thing to keep in mind when you are searching through our recipes section is that you will find several different how to infuse guides, and every single one will call for a specified amount of cannabis, but you can alter the potency of your marijuana edibles by using more or less instead. These guides are just that, and only provide boundaries that are ideal for moderate consumers. So, if you end up with weed cake that gets you far too high, instead of giving up of this method, it might be better to alter the amount of marijuana that is used to infuse your ingredients.

Use the infused ingredient as an alternative

  • The very last step is to use your freshly made cannabis-infused parts in your favorite recipe. This is easy to do if you are using the same base. So cannabutter that is being substituted for regular butter should be measured the same way, and this is the same for oils.

  • The only time these measurements should vary is if you are using substitute ingredients like oil in place of another fat based one. In this case, you should verify the appropriate amount that will be needed by using an alternative measurements guide for common, uninfused ingredients.

  • If you are a new or inexperienced consumer, then you might want to consider using only half of the infused ingredients. For example, if a recipe calls for 1 cup of butter, then instead of using 1 full cup of cannabutter, you could add only ½ cup along with a ½ cup of regular margarine.

  • Though some people struggle with the intense, long-lasting effects that come from eating cannabinoids, others may find that they have an unusually high tolerance to this method of ingestion. If you are seeking a more potent cannabis cake, than you can add in extras, like making icing using cannabutter or straight up decarboxylated bud grind.

  • One of the biggest mistakes that are made with marijuana edibles is a miscalculation of the salt that is in cannabutter. Most cannabutter recipes call for an unsalted base, but, if you have salted cannabutter, then you will want to skip adding any additional salt, even if the recipe specifically calls for it.

  • Are infused ingredients needed to make a cannabis cake?

Though it is generally recommended to use options like cannabutter or cannabis oil in recipes, this is mainly because of the texture, especially when it comes to cakes. Marijuana that’s been put through the process of being decarboxylated (activated) will be dry, grainy, and crunchy. If you do choose to use bud instead than be sure to grind it down as fine as possible, and adequately decarb it before adding it to the batter or your favorite cake.

This cannabis cake takes edibles to a whole new level by using as many infused ingredients as possible. Though most edibles recipes are geared towards less experienced consumers, this one is not recommended for anyone with a lower tolerance, as the effects of so many combined cannabis-infused ingredients are potent, intense, and have the potential to be overwhelming for new users.
