If you are relatively new to the world of vaping than you likely still have plenty to learn about the different types of vaporizers that are available on the market today. No two vapes are created equally, and there are limitations to certain devices as well as many benefits that should be weighed before investing in a particular product. Vapes in general cost an average of $40-$150 to start and go up from there, so a little bit of research is necessary if you don’t want to end up disappointed. Today we will focus on desktop marijuana vaporizers which are a whole different kind of vapes all their own for a host of reasons. Included you will find the definition of a desktop vaporizer, how they work, average cost, and both the positive and negatives of using one.

What is a desktop vaporizer?

Desktop vaporizers (AKA tabletop vaporizers) were one of the first vape designs out there meant for marijuana use for both concentrates and bud. They are an advanced version of a vape pen that is intended to remain stationary during use and will typically require several more functioning parts than other styles of vapes. Newer versions are much more expensive than portable options but will provide a higher quality vapor and experience, especially when they are used for vaping marijuana products. These devices will usually include one of two main methods of inhalation including either a silicone tube or a specially designed balloon to draw the vapor from.

How does a desktop vaporizer work?

These vapes will typically have a push button style start and or release and must be loaded manually. Tabletop vaporizers will use heat to bring marijuana products to the necessary boiling point. Cannabis holds many different kinds of cannabinoids that all vaporize at unique temperatures, and stationary vapes will allow the user enough control over the temperature to personalize their individual experience without needing to buy different kinds of marijuana. Once the appropriate amount of heat is applied, the cannabinoids will vaporize and are easy to inhale via a mouthpiece that will consist of either a rubber tube or a heat resistant balloon. Most desktop vapes also require a constant source of electricity since they need large amounts of power to function efficiently.

Types of tabletop vaporizers

There are three different heat distribution methods that are utilized by different kinds of stationary vapes to heat the marijuana product within.

Conduction

The oldest original vapes were all conduction, to begin with. These types are used for dry marijuana and used a direct application of heat to vaporize it. So metal bowls or plates are often designed to make direct contact with the dry herb. With desktop vaporizers that use conduction, the placement of the marijuana and even spread is necessary for an even burn, since any plant materials that do not come into direct contact with the heat will remain untouched and essentially wasted. The herb must also be ground quite fine and direct heat led to an increase in safety risks from spontaneous combustion which is what led to the creation of the convection vape.

Convection

Convection marijuana vapes utilize hot air that is produced by the vaporizer to apply heat which is much more efficient for marijuana concentrates and dry herb alike. These kinds do typically require mixing of the contents to vaporize them entirely, but it is a much more effective way to distribute high temperatures and decreases the potential risk for combustion thanks to a space between the metal plate, and the materials inside.

Hybrid

This kind of marijuana vaporizer uses both heating methods to get the job done. These vapes are rarely made into desktop models but are much more effective than either other designs out there. The combination of techniques allows for longer battery life and less requirement for a power source which is why they are so often designed to be more portable and handheld.

The average cost of desktop vaporizers: Earlier we had mentioned that the average price of vapes is between $40-$150 which is true, but that is only because compact designs are most popular in the market today and tend to come with lower price tags. Though you may be able to find a low-quality tabletop vaporizer within that range, the average cost for a stationary vaporizer is much higher and ranges between $150 and $500.

Pros and cons of using a desktop vaporizer for marijuana use

There are so many different kinds of vape designs out there that it is important to look at both the positive and negatives of using a particular device for marijuana.

Desktop vaporizers come equipped with some pretty incredible features and are favored by most experienced marijuana users who have experimented with other designs in the past. Though they are much more effective at doing the job, they aren’t necessarily the best option for everyone. An excellent vape is sort of useless if you can’t work it when needed, but for those who mainly use cannabis at home, or some other indoor space that has access to power it’s the most recommended vaporizer option out there.
