Cannabis is often praised as a plant that can do all kinds of things, from soothing aches and pains to lifting mood and increasing motivation. Still, despite an incredible amount of demand for access to this kind of information, we have very little scientific evidence to back up many of these claims. Most of the information we do have is anecdotal or gathered as part of studies that don’t necessarily focus on cannabis and its benefits alone, but that is something that is slowly changing.

As millions of cannabis enthusiasts have long suspected, the plant might be the key to figuring out how to stop nausea in its tracks, regardless of what causes it, something that a group of university researchers has officially confirmed as a fact. What is not quite so clear is how to measure its effectiveness to compare to other commonly prescribed medications, and we’ll circle back to that in just a moment. For now, we’re happy to reveal the results of the latest influential research into cannabis and how quickly it can work to get rid of nausea.

The study

This research was done in hopes of not only confirming previous anecdotal evidence but also determining the most effective ways to use cannabis for nausea. The study which was titled ‘The Effectiveness of Products for Treatment of Nausea’, was published in the Journal of clinical gastroenterology, and it observed more than 2,200 sessions where subjects self-administered various cannabis products before answering a list of questions. 866 people were included in this tracking of cannabis use, using an app to gather self-reported data in regard to managing nausea.

Important details

The findings conclude that most patients who use cannabis as a treatment for symptoms related to nausea are very likely to achieve relief quite quickly.

  • The most effective pot products for nausea seem to be both flower and concentrates with either Sativa or hybrid genetics.

  • Participants who consumed cannabis by smoking joints appeared to have achieved a greater level of relief when compared to those who relied on vaporizers, pipes, or bongs alone.

  • Combinations including high doses of THC and low doses of CBD were the most effective for relieving nausea.

Genetica
  • Relief was generally felt by subjects in as little as 5 minutes.

  • The method of use chosen seemed to lose its importance beyond the 1-hour mark after consumption, suggesting that all pot products should eventually provide a similar level of relief, even if some do take longer to kick in.

  • How to stop nausea using cannabis

Learning how to get rid of nausea with cannabis is a complicated process that relies heavily on experimentation to get things like dosing and frequency right. Each person's journey through cannabis treatments will be different, so, unfortunately, there is no one size fits all guide or suggestions to ease this uncomfortable symptom. However, there are some specific strains that are well known for their anti-nausea effects, and that’s an excellent place to start.

    Best strains for nausea

What helps with nausea will be different from one person to the next, with some having more success with potent types and others having the best luck with milder options. This list includes options from both those categories as well as several in between, and it’s full of strains that are well known for soothing bouts of nausea that may be caused by just about anything, from illness to more temporary reactions.
