Easy homemade hamburger buns from scratch with cannabis
The best part about making buns from scratch is that you can have them in any way you like, by using different toppings to create a unique texture. These cannabis-infused buns are amazing plain, but if you’re in the mood to spice things up, then a handful of sesame or poppy seeds can go a long way, and add flavour. It is important to note that you will need cannabis-infused oil to infuse the bread, so if you don’t already have some on hand, then check out our top 3 recipes for inspiration.
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup + 2 tablespoons warm water
- 1/3 cup cannabis-infused vegetable oil
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons active dry yeast
Egg wash ingredients
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon water
- Large mixing bowl
- Dough hook
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper
- Clean towel
- Small bowl
- Sauce brush
Whisk the yeast and warm water together in a large bowl.
Add the cannabis oil and sugar before leaving the mixture to sit for 5 minutes, or until it starts to look foamy.
Stir the egg into the mixture followed by the salt and the flour until it begins to resemble a workable dough.
Use a dough hook to knead the bread dough for 5 minutes, or until it is smooth and stretchy.
Pre-heat the oven to 425°F.
Roll the dough into a giant ball and flatten it out slightly to make it easier to cut it into 8 equally sized slices.
Do not leave the dough to rise. Instead, shape it into 8 smaller balls by hand.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the dough balls out evenly across the pan.
Now cover the dough balls with a clean towel and leave them to rise for only
10 minutes. Any longer and the end result will have an entirely different texture and size, so don’t leave it unattended.
While you’re waiting for the short rise to finish, it’s time to whip up the egg wash by whisking 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water together in a small bowl.
Once the 10 minutes are up, use a sauce brush to apply a thin and even coating of the wash to each of the buns. This is also the perfect time to add your choice of seeds if you’d like a special topping.
Bake the buns in the oven for 8-12 minutes or until they turn a light golden brown.
Storage tips and tricks
These fresh, homemade hamburger buns should be left to cool completely before serving or storing in an airtight container where they’ll stay fresh for up to 2 days. If you’d like this batch to last longer, then they can also be frozen for up to 2 months.
