Published Mar 13, 2019 11:02 a.m. ET

Most cannabis-lovers know that smoking weed and playing video games is a well-loved tradition that doesn’t always involve sitting still, and that the effects of THC on gameplay are in many cases overly positive, particularly for those who are regular users. What most don’t know is why. While we won’t lose your attention with scientific jargon, we will say that there are weed strains for focus and those who play both fast-paced and relaxing video games. Who's to say, maybe you'll benefit from using a little green before your next on-screen challenge. Will weed make you a better gamer? Well, that depends on too many factors to know for sure, but why not put it to the test and find out for yourself? Here you will find a list of some of the best video games to play while stoned, and we will finish with a few of the best weed strains for focus.

1. Mario

Mario is a series of relaxing video games that can also have your heart pumping in a matter of minutes. No, we aren’t talking about the newer style Mario Kart nonsense, we mean the old school flat image Mariothat had to make his way through distant lands to save Yoshi, Peach, and many of their friends. Nostalgia, challenge, and the ability to pause as needed to partake in a session making it one of the best but unfortunately also the least accessible on our list. If you are lucky enough to have access to it, you must try it stoned; there is nothing else that quite compares. If not, then the next best substitute would be Mario Kart.

Available on Platforms: Nintendo, Nintendo 64, and Raspberry Pi.

2. Halo Reach

If you prefer something a little faster paced than maybe Halo Reachis the one for you. Enter a virtual world where you can either firefight your way through hordes of aliens, or team up with friends or strangers to conquer several different alien platforms you might spawn in. With groups of four on four, this first-person shooter game is perfect for those who want to connect with others from a distance. 20 minute long duals mean plenty of well-timed breaks to toke between rounds.

Available on Platforms: Xbox 360

3. Fortnite

Fortnite is the most popular video game of 2018. Since being released on iOS, their fanbase has doubled in a craze that is being comparedto Pokemon Go. This shooter survivalist game can hold up to four players that you will team up with to fight off zombies and creatures straight from your nightmares. Part of the challenge is shooting skill while the other is based on strategy as you build walls surrounding precious items and win wars in battle arenas. In creative mode, you have the option to make worlds from scratch before playing in them which is perfect for those who want to get a little more technical with the layouts and possibilities for gameplay.

Available on Platforms: Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, Android, and iOS.

4. Rock Band

Wish you could play the guitar but don’t have time to take a lesson? Rock Band is a popular game amongst all ages and is the perfect go-to option when indulging in a little green on your night off. Whether you have a few minutes or several hours depending on the one you select, you will find a massive library of the genre associated with your version available to learn. You can play it sitting down or standing up while jump around singing to all your favorite hits.

Available on Platforms: Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation, 4, PlayStation 2, and PSP.

5. Minecraft

When it comes to sandbox type games like Minecraft, weed can help to make you a better gamer. The premise is that each player is dropped onto a map that is meant to mimic real-life landscapes like forests and clay bottom lakes. The goal changes depending on which setting you choose. Survival will have you running from zombies and cave monsters that can spawn anywhere in the dark. You will have to mine and search for essentials like wood, stone, coal, or food and hide at nightfall to avoid being killed. You will also have to build items like working locks and chests and weapons like swords and bows for protection and hunting to survive. Creative mode allows the players to build using limitless materials that they don’t have to mine for. They are just readily available through a menu. No matter which you choose the challenge of building a fantasy land is one that can be enjoyed by almost anyone. It can also be one of the most time-consuming video games, with many putting hundreds of hours or more into their very own worlds. This game works offline and can also join online servers to play with other people.

Available on Platforms: Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, MacOS, PlayStation 4, Windows phones, Nintendo 3DS, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Linux, PlayStation Vita, Universal Windows, Raspberry Pi, tvOS, and Fire OS.
