We got a slight taste of normalcy in 2021 as cannabis events slowly albeit hesitantly returned to the scene. Some made it in person, while others opted for virtual so that they could include as many passionate individuals as possible without risking anyone's health or racing the possible re-introduction of mandates. It’s been a crazy year full of uncertainty, but Californians made the best of it by giving credit to cannabis professionals where it’s due.

The Emerald Cup

In April of 2021, growers, manufacturers, consumers, and industry leaders from all over California gathered to compete and celebrate local talent. Though format changed, the delivery of stellar winners was the same as always, with Sour Tangie by Redwood Remedies and Gelonade by Connected Cannabis Co. taking home the gold. By the time cannabis cup victors were informed, interested participants were already signing up to be part of the festivities in 2022.

NorCal High Times Cannabis Cup

High Times hosted cannabis cup events in 7 states and then followed up on that action with Hemp Cup. Juice Z by Atrium Cultivation, Alien Cookies by Sovereign’s Miracle, and Super Lemon Haze by Garcia Hand Picked were the biggest winners from the golden state across the board.

The Grow-Off

The Grow Off is a high-energy competition for cultivators with plenty of interested participants after announcing that this year’s challenge would be to see who could grow the most spectacular plants using the same clones. Hella Jelly (Very Cherry x Notorious THC) by the Humboldt boutique Fenario Farms won this one in a great show of skill.

Weedcon

Weedcon was praised this year for showcasing talented producers who chose to present well-known strains rather than brand-new creations. There were 3 cannabis cup winners in total for Best Flower including MKJ #5 (Moose Tracks X Tina) by Mohave Reserve, Peanut Butter Breath by Triple 7, and Sol Spirit Farm’s Rise and Shine Activate. The sun-grown category is where DewPoint’s London Pound Cake shone, while Papaya Sunset Hashish joints won gold for being the best Exotic Pre-roll.

Last but not least Paradox’s Papaya Bomb shared the spotlight, with a solvent delight that couldn’t be beaten.
