If you are just learning about growing marijuana and are interested in additional tools that can help to improve the environment than you might have heard about ozone generators. These tools are used by the most professional cannabis breeders and producers to maintain the environment within their grow rooms. Houses are often full of stagnant air and millions of particles that include bacteria and other foreign substances, many of which can be detrimental to the quality of the air inside of a grow room. This can hinder a cannabis plant’s ability to thrive and allows multiple opportunities for cross contamination which can ruin an entire crop that results from a costly breeding program.

An ozone generator isn’t something that you would use all the time and is instead meant to sanitize the air and surfaces inside of a room as part of regular maintenance. Here we will explain what an ozone generator is, what they do, the risk, and how to use one as safely as possible in a grow room.

What is an ozone generator?

An ozone generator is meant to clean the air of impurities including hazardous airborne particles that might either smell badly or be dangerous to your health.

How does an ozone generator work?

An ozone generator creates an element called ozone that makes its way through a room, creating chemical reactions as it cleanses the air of impurities. Some of the element will turn into oxygen once it comes into contact with organic materials including smoke or odor thanks to a process called oxidation that immediately destroys any contaminants in its path including mold and mildew.

How often should an ozone generator be used?

One of these machines in home cannabis grow room should never be run for more than six hours in one day.

Places other than cannabis grow rooms that use ozone generators

Since these machines are so incredibly beneficial when you are growing marijuana indoors, it only makes sense that they are utilized by many other professional spaces including doctor's offices, hospitals, commercial kitchens, factories, and offices all over the world to help keep the air fresh and sterile.

How to use an ozone generator for growing marijuana

Choosing a type of ozone generator for the correct amount of space in your grow room is essential to this investment working as intended. A small space will only require a small machine, and anything more than that will create too much ozone for the environment which can be hazardous to both your home and the people living in it. Follow these steps carefully for the safest use of an ozone machine to grow cannabis.

  1. Choose the appropriately sized device and timer and remove all living cannabis plants from the grow room.
  2. Be sure that all pets and people have left the indoor grow room, and that the door is closed before the machine is turned on.
  3. Plug in the ozone generator, aim it towards the center of the room and ensure the timer is set for less than 6 hours.
  4. Test the amount of ozone emitting from the machine using a chemical filtering mask. The general rule is that if you can smell the chemical being produced, then it is probably putting off too much and should be adjusted accordingly. Only minimal amounts of ozone are required in small spaces like those so commonly converted into grow rooms.
  5. Leave the room and do not return unless necessary until 30 minutes after the ozone generator has finished it’s cycle.
  6. Once you return to the room, you might notice a small amount of residual liquid has rested on surfaces, especially those with a metal base. Take a clean cloth and wipe down each tool and piece to finish the sterilization process.

Benefits of using an ozone generator in a grow room

  1. Foreign terpenes are removed from the environment.
  2. Removes carbon compounds.
  3. Sterilizes a grow room to prevent cross contamination between cannabis strains.
  4. Kills mold and mildew.

Risks of using an ozone generator in your home

The most important thing to remember when you are growing marijuana with the assistance of an ozone generator between crops is that it is emitting a toxic chemical that is hazardous to humans if inhaled. This is the most significant risk as it can be toxic and cause an adverse reaction when used incorrectly.
