Every stoner should come to the table fully equipped; otherwise, no matter what your skill level, the task will not be an easy one. Though its often one of the least thought of, the rolling tray is one of the most useful weed accessories in any tokers toolbox.

A rolling tray helps to contain the bud grinds that stray, keep sticky cannabis concentrates from getting all over your table, can stop your other weed accessories from rolling away, and it works as a perfect on the spot table in situations where you don’t have another smooth or clean surface to use. So, if you don’t already own one, then you really need to get one ASAP, but before you do, there are a few things that you should look for so that you aren’t disappointed with your purchase.

1. Size
The rolling tray is one of the few accessories that can be useful in so many ways, which is why the size is so important. If you want a rolling tray that will comfortably hold your grinder, cannabis, papers, and even your weed pipe or bong, then you need to skip right over the cheapest, smallest and most common size, which is around 3 inches by 5 inches. Instead, look for an option that is as large as possible, because when it comes to a rolling tray, there really is no such thing as too big.

2. Coating
If you look at the average rolling tray, you will see that they often sport a gorgeous design to catch your attention, and while that can be a fun way to personalize your gear, some coatings can come off and flake into your cannabis. What you need to look for are trays that are coated in a heatproof pain that might scratch if you took a key to it but holds up well to regular rolling without contaminating your herb.

3. Structure
We mentioned the fact that you want a rolling tray that can hold all of your weed accessories, but to take that to the next level, they can also be helpful in relocating a stash from one place to another in a hurry. Whether you want to move all of your weed and tools to the garage, or just want to switch rooms, most stoners eventually end up using their rolling tray as a carrying tool, so you need one that is made of a strong material like steel or a thick aluminum, because plastic and silicone just aren’t up to the challenge.

4. Depth
Some of the prettiest rolling tray options ae also really shallow, and while they might be enough to hold your bud grind inside, they might not catch a sliding bong, pipe, or weed grinder, which could be devastating. Save yourself the stress and money and find a tray with high edges that are at least ½ inch deep.

5. Indents or curves
A good rolling tray is going to provide the smoothest surface possible, so while engraved options might be visually appealing, they are going to trap bits of weed, which isn’t the most convenient. Silicone lined trays also have this problem, as there is no way to glide a smooth edge of a pack of rolling papers to scoop up the herb. Bits will be left all over the place, and in the end, you will either stop using it or lose a whole lot of cannabis along the way.
