Now many of you reading this right now likely used one way back in high school when you had no money, and no want or need to carry around more obvious paraphernalia.

What is a lung?

A lung is a homemade smoking device that can be used to smoke cannabis. The primary principles a lung functions off of are similar to those of a water gravity bucket. The difference is that a bag is used to create the draw instead of an evacuation of water. A plastic bag will line the inside of a bottle and when it is pulled it will create a draw that draws the smoke into the container where it is held until the user inhales it.

How to make a lung for smoking weed

Materials and Tools

• 1 two-liter plastic bottle (other sizes that are close will also work, but a two liter is most recommended)
• 1 hole free plastic bag (grocery bags will work, but garbage bags will seal much better)
• 1 bowl with downstem (glass or metal)
• 1 pair of scissors
• 1 roll of electrical tape

Instructions

1. Rinse the bottle you have chosen for this project and remove any labels that are still attached.
2. Use a pair of scissors to carefully remove the rounded bottom portion of the bottle. 2-3 Inches from the bottom is ideal.
3. Now you will need to measure your bag. You can do this by opening the bag and putting your hand right to the bottom center of it and pressing the plastic against the inside of the bottle. The amount that is sticking out will need to be cut off.
4. Grab your electrical tape and line up the edges of the bag as well as you can. This may require some overlapping. The most important thing to focus on in the seal. When you are finished push the bag into the bottle and remove as much air as you can. Then place the lid on the bottle and try to pull the bag. If there is hesitance than there is a draw and the base should be ready to go. If you don’t feel any pull than double check the seals for leaks. Once you are certain that there is sufficient draw, you can set the bottle aside and move to the next step.
5. Remove the lid from the bottom and drill a small hole in the center of it. This can be done by melting it with a lighter, by piercing it with a drill or working your way through with scissor tips. The goal is to make a hole that your bowl stem will fit into snugly. When you are satisfied with the fit, then you can put the lid with bowl installed back onto the pop bottle.

How to use a lung

If you have never used a lung before than the concept may seem a bit daunting, but we promise you, it’s incredibly simple to use.

1. To begin, you will need to press the plastic bag against the inside of the bottle removing as much air from the bottle as possible.
2. Now you can pack a bowl with dried herb as you normally would.
3. The bowl that is located inside of the cap can now be lit, and the smoke is able to be drawn into the lung from the force that is made by slowly pulling the plastic bag out of the bottle.
4. Once the toke has been brewed, you can remove the cap which will expose an open mouthpiece. Press your lips to the opening and inhale the smoke from within the bottle. If the plastic bag is not drawn back into the bottle when you inhale, then you probably have a leak, and need to check your seals again.
