With Christmas right around the corner, it’s time to start getting ready for the holiday, and while many of us rely on store-bought pre-made options, there is nothing better than custom coffee mugs, as you can make them yourself and they don’t cost much to design.

So, if you want to give the stoners in your life a heartwarming cup that is fit for any wake and bake for Christmas, then check out these two tutorials on how to do just that. Just remember, that only the first option is dishwasher friendly, so it’s a good idea to make a small card or sticker to go with the gift that explains how to properly care for the mug so that it lasts for years to come.

The baked pot leaf coffee mug, dishwasher safe method

This DIY craft will require access to an oven to complete, as the extreme heat is what sets the design so that it lasts through multiple washes and uses. Pretty much everyone has a sharpie lying around and if you don’t, then you can find one at your local dollar store, the very same place that offers excellent deals on mugs. This is the cheapest and longest lasting option of the two, with the whole project costing less than $5 in most cases.

You will need:

  • Sharpie marker (oil-based)
  • Pencil
  • Coffee mug (heatproof)
  • Stencils or designs
  • Large fan leaves
  • Masking tape

Instructions

  1. Wash out the mug with hot and soapy water, then pat it completely dry before you begin. This ensures a resistance-free surface that will hold onto the sharpie without interference.

  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F.

  3. Use a pencil first so that you can lightly plan out a beautiful design without having to commit until you are completely satisfied. You can use a giant pot leaf as a stencil, or come up with a witty saying or sketch, the choice is yours, and the options are truly limitless as far as what you can do. Stick to only one color or incorporate multiple as you design the ultimate, personalized coffee mugs that speak right from the heart.

  4. Once you are satisfied with your masterpiece, toss it into the preheated oven for 30 minutes.

  5. After that time has passed remove it from the oven and allow to cool, but don’t shut the stove down quite yet.

  6. Once the mug has cooled, it can be baked for an additional 30 minutes which really helps to set the image and add to the life expectancy of the custom coffee mugs.

The painted pot leaf method (not dishwasher safe)

It’s best to do this homemade project somewhere with a fair amount of airflow so that you don’t inhale too many fumes, but if you can’t do the whole thing in a well-ventilated space, then you must at least apply the sealant outdoors. The strong and pungent fumes can be harmful to your health and nausea-inducing until it dries, so is it important to plan this part of the process long before you begin.

You will need:

  • Acrylic deco paint (preferred colors)
  • Fine paintbrush
  • Coffee mug
  • Large fan leaves
  • Craft sealant (waterproof)
  • Masking tape
  • Pencil

Instructions

  1. Begin by thoroughly washing and drying the mug.

  2. Manipulating paint is much easier and more fun than simple marker drawing, as it allows you to use things like a pot leaf as a stamp for the paint, and if for some reason or another, you don’t like the image, you can wash it off and restart, so have fun experimenting until you find a look that is fitting or suits you.

  3. When you are finished, the custom coffee mugs must be dried completely before coating, otherwise, you risk the chance of the paint running, which will ruin your hard work, so it’s best to wait a little more than an hour to be safe.

  4. Once you are certain that the paint has set and isn’t going anywhere, you have a couple of options. You can either make it into a multi-layer piece and go back to add the finer details or seal the deal with a spray-on sealant. Just be sure to stay at least a foot away from the cup to avoid drips that will ruin the smoothness of the custom coffee cups.

  5. Let the cups sit and set for at least 24 hours before washing it out by hand. Then it will finally be ready to be wrapped and gifted to the stoners on your Christmas list.

No matter which one of these easy DIY gifts ideas you choose, your friends and family are sure to be impressed with the originality and personal touch that you just can’t buy in a store.
