BHO - What is it and how it’s made
What is BHO? - BHO or butane hash oil is a concentrate made from cannabis plants. It contains highly concentrated amounts of the psychoactive compound THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). Butane hash oils have been made and used for hundreds of years with little understanding of what they really are. Since coming across butane hash oil is a rare occurrence for most users, it is often considered an exciting new form of weed. BHO’s can be expensive to make if you must purchase your dried cannabis from a supplier, soit is frequented mostly by those who grow plants themselves. It's value well exceeds that of its base product, and that is likely why you don’t see it as widely available as you do some other cannabis products. It takes time, patience, and some science to create. BHO is made by condensing large quantities of marijuana. Something many growers would prefer not to deal with unless it’s for personal use.
Is BHO safe? Ingesting BHO is relatively safe on its own, but the methods used during the extraction process when making BHO can undoubtedly come with several risks. The most significant risk associated with butane hash oil is due to the solvents involved. All solvents used are combustible, and precautions need to be taken when making it. Not only is extracting a bit tricky and potentially flammable. There is also a risk of combustion if a user tries to smoke a butane hash oil before the solvent has completely evaporated. Butane will dissipate over time on its own, so the last threat is only of concern to those who make a fresh batch and are too impatient. The only other possible adverse effects to be expected from BHO is due to its potency. Like most concentrates, consuming large amounts of THC is easy to do. The results may not necessarily be expected by someone new to smoking BHO. BHO effects on lungs are described as a heavy feeling that slowly goes away. This is due to the excess phlegm the body will produce in response to having BHO into the lungs.
Vaping BHO wax- These days vaping is all the rage and a method of ingestion preferred by many for its advantages over smoking. While smoking anything can irritate your lungs vaping doesn't. The downside to vaping is generally the additives in purchased vape juice like glycerin that will release known cancer-causing carcinogens when heated. Luckily you can make your own vape juice using BHO.
How to make vape juice out using BHO
Making your own vape juice from BHO allows for a highly concentrated vape juice that is clean and free of nasty chemicals. The recipe we will show you here is the simplest method and can be done in as little as 48 hours.
The Freezer Method
Freezing is one of the safest ways to create your own vape juice at home.
- 500 ml of alcohol (highest proof available)
- 1 to three grams of BHO
- Access to a freezer
- 2 freezer safe baggies
- 2 sealable mason jars
Step 1- Place one to three grams of BHO concentrate into a freezer-safe baggie. Freeze for three hours alongside the bottle of alcohol you will be using.
Step 2- Once your BHO is completely frozen drop it into a large, clean sealable mason jar. Now add 500 ml of alcohol. Close the lid and shake vigorously for five minutes.
Step 3- Place your jar into a freezer for the next 48 hours. You will need to remove it every 3 hours to shake the mixture. This will ensure maximum extraction. Immediately return it to a freezer when finished as the cold is a necessary part of the process.
Step 4- Once 2 days have passed remove the jar from the freezer. Cover a new mason jar with a fine mesh strainer.
Step 5- Pour the mixture slowly into the strainer to remove any impurities.
Step 6- Ensure the jar is sealed and store it in a cool dark place. Your vape juice is now ready to be used and can immediately be added to any vape pen cartridge.
What is BHO extraction? The extraction of BHO is a process using a solvent to break down the wanted cannabinoids like THC or CBD. A solvent is used to soak the plant matter until extraction is complete.
How to make Butane Hash Oil
- 3 ounces of dried marijuana or leaf trimmings
- 4 cans of butane
- An extraction tube
- A coffee filter or cheesecloth
- 1 bowl made of anything other than plastic
- 1 concentrate container
- 1 saucepan
- Water (enough to fill the saucepan halfway)
Step 1 - To begin, take 2 ounces of dry herb and pack your extraction tube with it. If you don’t have one, you can use almost any tube-shaped container. There must be one end with a hole that will snugly fit the butane tip while the other needs to be open.
Step 2 - Use a coffee filter to completely cover the open end you used to pack the tube. It can be fastened by using an elastic or twine.
Step 3 - Hold your extraction tube overtop of a clean bowl and press the tip of the butane tube into the top of the tube. Push until you hear the can releasing butane. Hold it in place until the butane can is empty. Now grab the next can and repeat until all 3 containers are gone.
Step 4 - Once empty you can remove the butane can. Continue holding the extraction tube over the bowl until all the liquid has run through it. You should not see any drips coming from the tube when it’s done.
Step 5 - Now the extraction process is complete, and we will need to remove the solvent by allowing it to evaporate. Place the bowl of liquid into a deep saucepan and fill it with hot water. This should be done on a countertop and not a burner.
Step 6 - Once heated the mixture will begin to bubble. The solvent has now started to evaporate. Add water as needed throughout this step. When the solution no longer bubbles it is done.
Step 7 - Now you can collect the BHO using a blade or something equivalent and place it into a concentrate container to store.
How is BHO oil used?
Now that you know how it’s made, it’s helpful to understand how BHO is used. Since BHO is just a condensed version of THC, it is often recommended for its fast-acting capabilities. It can be smoked, vaped, condensed further, or mixed into edibles. BHO is quite a versatile concentrate and can also be dabbed, eaten pure, or used in addition to other cannabis products when added to joints or bongs. Each method of using BHO oil varies in its effects. Eating is the most potent and longest lasting method of ingestion. It is not recommended in large doses for beginners but great for the seasoned regular user looking for an extra kick.
