We’ve uncovered the magic of cannabis terpenes and some of the various smells that they are known to emit, but figuring out how many different scents there are in the big wide world of weed strains is a lot more difficult than you might think. It’s so hard, in fact, that experts still argue over the answer because its aroma, like the effects of cannabis, is a very personal experience. What we’ve got instead is a long list of scents that are often associated with cannabis, and there is no shortage of options to choose from.

Skunk

Skunk weed is notorious for its pungent smell that is often compared to other less than appealing aromas like ammonia.

Examples: Critical Kush, Skunk #1, Super Skunk, Shoreline, Big Bang, and Shiva Skunk

Cheese

Cheese is also a relatively pungent aroma, with a smoother hit, and it’s comparable to real burnt cheese, which is delicious.

Examples: Blue Cheese, Big Buddha Cheese, Swiss Cheese, Sheeze N Chong, Chiesel, and Dairy Queen

Mint

For those who enjoy the tingly sensation that you get from a breath mint or menthol, it’s a nice light scent that is easy on the nose and the lungs.

Examples:  Wonder Kid, Double Mint, Peppermint Cookies, Thin Mint GSC, Thai Lights, and Kush Mints

Pineapple

Weed strains with a pineapple aroma offer the tangy freshness that you’d expect from a fresh-cut fruit, but they’re strong, so not the most ideal if you’re concerned about discretion.

Examples: Pineapple, Pineapple Kush, Pineapple Express, Pineapple Cheese, Pineapple Haze, and Blue Pineapple

Citrus

Airy citrus strains are some of the most popular on the market because the lemon and orange combination scent doesn’t linger for very long, and it’s easy on the nose.

Examples: Amnesia Haze, Tangerine Dream, Citrus Punch, Super Silver Haze, Northern Lights, and LSD

Lavender

A sweet and gentle lavender is enough to make anyone drift off into a deep sleep, and the lighter aroma means that it isn’t super stinky, making it perfect for discreet toking sessions.

Examples: Lavender, Lavender Kush, Lavender Haze, Midnight, Green Love Potion, and Zombie OG

Pine

The fresh smell of pine is invigorating, as it makes us think of fresh-cut Christmas trees and fall, which makes it a perfect seasonal aroma choice for consumers.

Examples: Green Crack, Jack Herer, Purple Kush, Qush, In the Pines, and Green Lantern

Flowery

If you’re looking for weed strains that aren’t so distinctly noticeable, a flowery aroma is a good option because the light scents smell just like a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers.

Examples: Violet Delight, Pink Starburst, Pink Kush, Versace, White Dream, and Purple Dragon

Sweet

Sweet is sort of a generalized term that can mean many things, but in this case, think of the sweetest, stickiest candy that you’ve ever tasted, and some strains will smell just like that.

Examples: Karibbean Mango, Crystal Candy, Jamaican Dream, Somango, Columbian Sweet, and Strawberry Cough

Diesel

This fuel like aroma is pungent and often associated with the most potent weed strains because the smell seems to have just as much of an effect as the cannabinoids.

Examples: Diesel, Cannatonic, Chielsel, Original Glue, Sour Diesel, and Jack Diesel

Lemon

Lip puckering lemon strains provide an intoxicating scent that is both pungent and sweet, a combination that results in an incredible lemon smell.

Examples: Super Lemon Haze, Lemon Kush, Lemon Tree, Golden Lemons, Lemon Haze, and Rainbow Sherbert

Spicy

If you’ve ever had a strain that made your nose tingle and eyes water, then you should know that it was likely a spicy, peppery type.

Examples: Super Critical, Treasure Island, Blowfish, Light of Jah, Good Medicine, and Dream Lotus

Chemical

Chemical weed strains are commonly sought after as prized products, and the smell is often described as a combination of skunk, cheese, and diesel, somehow wafting through the various aromas with each puff.

Examples: Purple Chendawg, OG Chem, LA Ultra, Alien Rift, Ice, and Snow Lotus

Rose

The smell of the ultimate symbol of love and admiration is easily replicated by certain weed strain, and if you try them, you’ll see that it’s almost the same as smelling a fresh cut rose.

Examples: Rose Bud, Rose OG, Sugar Black Rose, Red Dwarf, OG Ringo, and Mercury OG

Berry

If you enjoy lighter, sweeter weed strains that don’t produce a pungent scent that lingers, then a delightful combination of strawberry, blueberry, and blackberry might be a good choice.

Examples: Blackberry, Blue Haze, Berry White, Raspberry Kush, Shishkaberry, and Plushberry

Blueberry

Fresh blueberries are sweet with a deep aroma that cannot be found anywhere else, which is why weed strains with this aroma are hot items on the market today.

Examples: The Original Blueberry, Blueberry Muffin, Blueberry Kush, DJ Short Blueberry, Blue Lights, and Blueberry Cheesecake

Coffee

There is nothing that perks up most of us quite like a cup of coffee, but some weed strains can produce a similar effect through aroma alone, as they smell just like a freshly brewed cup of joe.

Examples: The OX, Madman OG, Kashmir Kush, American Kush, Hong Kong, and Hurkle

Lime

The super sour scent of freshly sliced limes is enough to make anyone feel motivated, and it’s much less harsh on the senses than other more pungent varieties.

Examples: Key Lime Pie, Lime Skunk, Cherry Limeade, Lime Green Skunk, Lime Haze, and Citrus Sunshine Haze

Honey

These weed strains are as sweet as honey, which means that they go down smooth and produce a gentle, sweet smell that will remind you of cookies and other fancy desserts.

Examples: Panama Red, Fortune Cookies, Nebula, Lodi Dodi, BC Sweet Tooth, and Thor’s Hammer

Nutty

The subtle nutty aroma is impossible to ignore, as it’ll make your mouth water thinking of peanut butter and all of your other favourite nut-based combination snacks.

Oranges are bold, tangy, and sweet when they’re ripe, and weed strains with this aroma are just as fantastic for the senses.

Examples: Tangie, Agent Orange, Tangerine Dream, Chernobyl, Orange Cookies, and Orange Creamsicle

Grapefruit

If you’re looking for a scent that is both incredibly sweet and sickeningly sour, then grapefruit is perfect, and it’s strong enough to perk you up when you’re feeling down.

Examples: Grapefruit, Pink Grapefruit, Big Grapefruit, Cherry Grapefruit, Cinderella, and Grapefruit Kush

Herbal

Potpourri consists of a unique combination of sweet, tart, and sour smells that appeal to the senses in a way that can be either relaxing or invigorating, and that’s exactly what you get with herbal strains.
